MESA to Begin at Nex+Gen!

I am pleased to announce that nex+Gen MESA (Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement) is in its 5th year!   In addition to the elective class offered 1st period, this year we will have a MESA club which will meet after school or during lunch one time each week (day/time TBD).

Here are some details:

1.   This year there will be two possible tracts for our MESA club:  - Competitive tract - work on a team to prepare for MESA Day 2018 (held in Roswell, NM).  We have placed in the top 10 teams in the state three years in a row for MESA USA - let's continue our legacy!
- Fun tract - show up weekly to engage in a series of fun design challenges and activities

2.   We have several awesome field trips planned for the year, and you can go if you become a member of MESA for the 2017-2018 school year (by submitting the A-1, A-2, and A-3 forms to Ms. White).

3.  You can earn points through participating in MESA meetings and activities which can earn you scholarship money (if you are a member for at least two years, including your senior year, and apply for the Loyalty Award - see here for more details)

4.  If you are interested in participating, we will be working with the Science Explorer for Families program again this year to facilitate family science nights at middle and elementary schools around the district.  This is a great change to take leadership and service learning beyond the walls of nex+Gen and share your love for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) with others!

On Thursday August 31 at lunch, we will be meeting at 12:15 during lunch in room 112.  At this meeting additional information about MESA this year will be provided.  We will also determine our weekly meeting time and date based upon our schedules.

David Lynch New Principal at Nex+Gen

You should know that I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work in small, innovative, and highly collaborative school like Nex+Gen Academy. I am hoping to be able to make a contribution to the ongoing success of the school.

I began my career as a high school teacher in northern New Jersey. During those first seven years, I taught Business, Technology, and all levels of Spanish. During those years, I was also a Student Council advisor, a Tennis Coach, and a Basketball Coach.  My wife, Sara, and I moved to Albuquerque in 2004 immediately after finishing my master’s degree at Seton Hall. My first job in  APS was at Desert Ridge Middle School where I taught Spanish and Social Studies. I then moved into administration and served as an Assistant Principal at McKinley MS and LBJ MS. For the last seven years, I have been the Principal of Garfield STEM school. Garfield STEM  is a small school of choice focused on collaboration, PBL, and Science.

We have two wonderful sons Alexander 12, and Matthew 10. They will be attending Desert Ridge and Double Eagle this year We have two crazy rescue dogs Hawk and Loki (yes there is a Marvel connection). There are also some fish but they are too numerous to name. My mother in law, Marcia also lives with us with her dog Charlotte.

Our family enjoys weekends in Durango and road trips in the summer. This summer we were able to make the 16-hour trek to Yellowstone National Park. It was a long drive but worth it. I am an avid soccer fan. I support the USMNT and Arsenal FC. The weekend schedule is planned around morning Arsenal games.

I am looking forward to meeting everyone in the Nex+Gen community.
